SL Benfica Pursuing Negotiations to Hire The Special One After Dismissal of Former Manager
José Mourinho is reportedly in advanced talks regarding a return to the Lisbon-based club, shortly following the termination of their former head coach. Mourinho earlier managed Benfica for a brief spell back in the turn of the millennium, and if appointed, he would soon meet a match against Chelsea in the Champions League set for September 30.
President’s Comments Confirming Decision
Benfica’s president announced the exit of Bruno Lage at a news conference conducted following the team’s loss at home to the Azerbaijani side in the Champions League. The president declared: “In my opinion this is the moment for a shift, exactly to prevent harming the campaign. As a result, the manager who takes over has to be a successful manager. The person representing a club of this size has to be an individual with the skill to elevate this side to the heights we demand and achieve the trophies we long for.”
Mourinho’s Latest Coaching Developments
His most recent position was leading Turkey’s club the Istanbul outfit, who parted ways with him in recent weeks when they were unable to qualify to the league phase of the European competition.
He initially achieved fame during his time at FC Porto, the local rivals, where he steered them to victory in the Europa League in 2003 and the Champions League in 2004. Following that success, he joined the London club and claimed top-flight titles in the 2004–05 season and 2006, as well as another trophy in 2015 during his second stint.
Furthermore, he led Inter to UCL glory in 2010 and, although he did not restore United to top form, he did manage guide them to the Europa League honor in the 2016–17 season. His spell at Spurs finished absent a trophy when he was sacked mere days prior to the squad was set to face Manchester City in the 2020–21 EFL Cup decider.
After that, he claimed the UECL with the Giallorossi in the 2021–22 season ahead of assuming control of Fenerbahçe in the summer of 2024. Notably that the team will finish their European group stage by hosting game at home versus Real Madrid.
