Gripping Film on Religious Scandal in NOLA Receives Premier Honor

A hard-hitting feature examining the systemic misconduct by religious leaders in the historic city has lately been awarded the honor for top feature at a Winter Park movie celebration.

Called “God As My Witness,” the production makes clear that individuals responsible for these acts will be exposed, while giving an outlet to victims and seeking accountability.

Presentations of the feature at the event in the beginning of fall apparently were fully booked, with numerous attendees deeply emotional by the content.

Helmed by a New Orleans native and developed by Michael Brandner Sr, the feature-length film builds on real-life experiences, including the uncovering of correspondence written by a religious figure identified of misconduct.

The story highlights numerous victims who experienced mistreatment while living in Catholic environments in the region.

Furthermore, the documentary covers the court process encountered by the religious institution, which sought financial reorganization in May 2020 due to widespread lawsuits of misconduct.

Up until recent reports, the financial proceedings is still ongoing, though a large number of claimants are currently deciding on a offered settlement totaling millions in compensation.

The director and producer accepted the top honor on September 7. The producer described that seeing those featured accept the honor was deeply emotional.

“The survivors transitioned from victim to someone who endured to hero,” the producer noted. “It was truly beautiful.”

Before the Colorado festival, the film received recognized for a major award at the Raindance film festival in mid-year.

The film also screened at a gathering in Portugal, where it was permitted to be presented in a sacred setting by a religious leader.

As stated by event directors, the documentary effectively turning a regional issue into a widely relatable one.

Looking ahead, the documentary is likely planned to screen at the 2025 New Orleans film festival in late October.

Tickets for that festival are scheduled to go on sale in mid-October.
