Alonso Sets Pace Opening Session at Marina Bay

Marina Bay Street Circuit

3-5 October will see the race kicking off at British Summer Time on race day.

Live updates streamed on radio channels and official website.

Practice Session Summary

The team's two-time champion topped the times beating Scuderia star and reigning champion during the opening session for the Singapore Grand Prix.

The British team's title rivals Oscar Piastri and British talent concluded the run in P5 and P6.

Piastri was over two tenths quicker than his teammate.

Alonso was a tenth and a half in front of the Ferrari driver and 0.276secs faster than Verstappen.

Ferrari's British icon was fourth fastest.

Car Performance

It is not expected that Aston Martin will be front-runners for the top spot.

However, the outfit are confident of a strong showing on a tight circuit that is better matched to their chassis, which runs more competitively when significant amounts of aerodynamic grip are called for.

Veteran racer Fernando is also famous as a street circuit master, and often shines on the Marina Bay street track.

However he was almost certainly operating with less fuel or a increased power than his opponents, or both, to set such a quick time.

Practice Conditions

Fellow driver Lance Stroll was almost two seconds slower in 18th place.

Stroll had problems with his driving position during the initial runs and was also running new components.

Opening practice in Singapore is not representative of later performance under lights as it is held in bright conditions in the daytime, while grid-deciding session and the main event are run under floodlights.

Title Battle

Piastri has an advantage over his teammate by a solid margin with seven races to go entering the weekend in Singapore.

McLaren are in position to wrap up the team title on Sunday.

The only way they can miss out in this race is if the Silver Arrows outscore them by thirty-one or Ferrari manage it by a similar margin.

Competitor Outlook

The energy drink brand's team are hopeful of a strong result after Max's wins in Italy and Azerbaijan preceding this Grand Prix.

It was a relief when precipitation occurring before the session abated by the moment the vehicles took to the track on a circuit that had stayed clear.

Senior figure the Austrian said before the session that they wanted a clear session to make a comprehensive start on fine-tuning their set-up for the event.
